SPRING 2010 COLLOQUIUM OF THE ACADEMY FOR JEWISH RELIGION, CALIFORNIA
DIMENSIONS OF THE DIVINE PRESENCE:
The Meaning of Shiur Qomah in Jewish Mysticism, Liturgy, and Rabbinic Thought
with
Marvin Sweeney, PhD
AJR, CA Professor of Tanach and Professor of Bible at
the Claremont School of Theology
Shiur Qomah, an ancient midrash on the Song of Songs, has puzzled commentators and scholars for over a thousand years, with its proclamation of the size of the limbs and body parts of G-d. Dr. Sweeney will take up the challenge of this text, showing that the Shiur Qomah is fundamentally concerned with prayer and how to imagine the Divine Presence as one prays.
