Jewish Chaplaincy Program
The goal of the Chaplaincy program is to provide a dynamic and supportive
learning community in which students can deepen their Judaic knowledge
and counseling skills in order to be able to work in multi-dimensional
chaplaincy settings. The program weaves together an integration
of Judaism, training and counseling, human development, the skills
to lead relevant liturgical ceremonies, Halachic requirements
relating to lifecycle events, knowledge of Jewish medical ethics,
an understanding of the dynamics of addiction, the particular needs
of the dying and their loved ones, and the comprehension of the
realities of the prison system. Students study Jewish texts and
their application to modern day situations, as well as counseling
skills to work with individuals, families, groups, institutions
and communities. The program is two academic years plus one summer,
with a year's Practicum/Fieldwork and a Masters thesis among
the requirements for certification. Our graduates are capable
of guiding others in moments of crisis, life-cycle events, the search
for meaning, the spiritual dimension of rituals, leading appropriate
prayers, and working in multi-dimensional settings. These include
hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, geriatric settings, mental health
facilities, college campuses, correctional institutions and recovery
centers. The program is open to psychotherapists, rabbinical and
cantorial students, and individuals with various professional backgrounds
such as religion, education, mental health and the arts. A Masters
Degree in Jewish Studies as well as a certificate in Jewish Chaplaincy
will be awarded upon completion of the program. |
